Every year, as winter settles over the Basque Coast, we find it’s the perfect time to set off and discover new horizons. Traveling is an integral part of our vision of surfing: exploring new waves, encountering different cultures, and enriching our approach to the ocean. These experiences directly nourish the way we teach surfing in Biarritz and strengthen the identity of Straight Up Surf School.
Winter serves as a precious interlude. It allows us to progress and gain perspective, returning with renewed energy, fresh ideas, and an even stronger desire to share our passion for surfing in the Basque Country.
This winter, our instructor Titouan chose a very special destination: Martinique, a true Caribbean gem and a must-visit spot for surf enthusiasts. More than just a trip, for him, it was a homecoming.
Although a native of the Basque Country, Titouan spent part of his childhood in Martinique. It was there that he first discovered surfing, caught his first waves, and developed his deep bond with the ocean. Returning to surf in Martiniquemeant reconnecting with his roots, his sensations, and his memories.
For several months, he worked as a surf instructor in Martinique. This was a rich experience, both personally and technically. Teaching in a new environment, with wave conditions different from those in Biarritz, allowed him to refine his teaching methods, adapt his advice, and deepen his understanding of the sport.
Between sessions at the island’s legendary spots, meeting locals, and sharing moments of connection, this stay was a true source of inspiration. Reconnecting with friends, his favorite waves, and that unique Caribbean atmosphere has further fueled his passion for surfing.
Today, Titouan is back in Biarritz at our surf school, driven by renewed motivation. Bringing the wealth of this experience with him, he adds a new dimension to his surf lessons: more precise advice, an even more personalized approach, and that same infectious energy.
