For this final winter journey, we headed to Central America, specifically to Nicaragua. It’s a destination that remains beautifully preserved, and over the years, it has become a must-visit spot for surf enthusiasts seeking authenticity and flawless waves.
This wasn’t our first time here. We first discovered the country last year, and fell in love with a place that left a deep impression on us: Tukasa. Located in Popoyo, one of the premier surf spots in Nicaragua, this hostel is much more than just a place to stay.
Tukasa quickly became a true source of inspiration for our surf school in Biarritz. It embodies everything that drives us on a daily basis: surfing, travel, human connections, music, and that unique atmosphere where everything feels simple, fluid, and genuine.
Returning to Nicaragua this winter was an obvious choice. The goal wasn’t just to surf, but also to learn, observe, and draw inspiration from those who have successfully built projects aligned with our own passions and values.
Between sessions on spots renowned for their consistency and quality, moments of connection, and immersion into a rich local culture, this trip marked another milestone in our journey. Nicaragua provides the ultimate conditions to progress, offering waves that are accessible yet technical, making them perfect for sharpening your wave-reading skills and improving your flow.
But beyond the surf, it’s the energy of the place that truly sticks with you. Their way of living, creating, and bringing people together. Over time, a real connection blossomed with our friends at Tukasa. We support each other in our respective projects, sharing ideas, visions, and a mutual desire to build something meaningful and high-quality around surfing and travel.
This kind of experience directly feeds into our approach at Straight Up Surf School. It shapes the way we design our surf lessons in Biarritz, how we welcome people, how we teach, and how we connect with our students.
Now back on the Basque coast, we return enriched by this adventure. More inspired than ever, we are driven to keep evolving our surf school in the Basque Country while staying true to what has motivated us from the very beginning: sharing, a passion for surfing, and keeping an open mind to the world.
This final chapter brings a winter full of travel, learning, and new encounters to a close. We can’t wait to pass all these experiences on to you in the water during your next surf lessons in Biarritz.
